PCI Receives Sprinker Ice Arena Renovation

The Sprinker Ice Arena is nearing completion and will be open in early January 2012.

Recent updates include, new dasher boards, newly applied wall coverings around the arena, sound system speakers being installed. The mechanical room is also being renovated with new chiller equipment and refrigeration system. The concession area and lobby are also receiving new updates.

After the concrete slab was poured in November, a protective plastic sheet was placed over the concrete surface to allow for the concrete to evenly cure. The new rink is more leak resistant than the old rink because of all the new updates.

PCI Wins Build Washington Award for Public Works Project Under $10 Million from the Associated General Contractors of Washington.
City of Tacoma

PCI received a Build Washington Award for the Spanish Steps Historical Rehabilitation project, in the category of “Public Works Project Under $10 Million” from the Associated General Contractors of Washington at their annual awards banquet on Thursday, May 19th, 2011.

Pease was able to save the City of Tacoma 4.5 percent of the contract price for rehabilitation work of the Spanish Steps by suggesting alternative methods of attaching the balusters to the railing. The total contract amount was $457,000. The safety requirements were exceeded on this project by developing and following a stringent air-respirator program because the project required an extensive amount of concrete grinding.

PCI has received Build Washington Awards from AGC of Washington in years past. In 2009, we received an award for the Tinglestad Dormitories at Pacific Lutheran University and have also received an award for the Combined Arms Training Facility at Joint Base Lewis- McChord.

The Spanish Steps, located in Tacoma’s Old City Hall Historic District, were designed by E. Frere Champney, a French- born architect, in 1916. Pease Construction recently completed renovating this neoclassic landmark. Rehabilitating the steps involved careful non-abrasive cleaning methods, to make sure the substrate was not further damaged. While it would have been less expensive to remake many of the balusters, Pease Construction painstakingly restored them by using a special custom made mortar that allowed for the same vapor transmission as the original substrate.

Some balusters, urns and railing had to be replaced because they were too deteriorated or missing. Models of these parts were made and shipped to the certified marblecrete precaster for exact replication.
